The Great Flood

Ipak, to nije konačna smrt.

Svaka smrt znači resetovanje i ponovni početak misije.

Many met this film with harsh criticism, labeling it as too „Nolanesque“ and narratively confusing. Therefore, I will clarify the plot below to demonstrate that the story actually makes perfect sense, but it requires the viewer to really engage their brain, as the devil is in the details.

The film can be divided into two parts: the real world and the world of memory. The action in reality takes place in the first half of the film (up to the 56th minute). The world has been hit by a cataclysm that threatens to flood it entirely. Rescue units come for a scientist and her son, as he is the key to survival and the continuation of the human species. However, upon entering the rescue helicopter, the scientist faces a hard truth: her son is destined to die for the sake of saving humanity. Yet, this is not a final death. His brain is the key, missing element in the cloning process that allows an artificial human to develop emotions. Thus, her son will continue to live, but through another body. The mother’s (scientist’s) role is crucial—she must „unlock“ her son’s emotions so they can be simulated by a computer. After she departs on a space mission with her son’s brain, an accident occurs.

From that moment on, the plot shifts to a virtual world of memory (which looks like the real one, hence the confusion). The scientist’s task is to connect with her son, and this process is structured like levels in a video game. Every death means a reset and restarting the mission. The numbers appearing on her shirt indicate the number of attempts, or failures, at that level. Attentive viewers will notice a pointcloud in the set design during one repetition, which is a clear visual signal that we are inside a virtual simulation.

In essence, this is a film about the unbreakable power of a mother’s will. Even after tens of thousands of repetitions of the same level, she refuses to give up on her goal—connecting with her child.

In my opinion, this is an exceptional achievement, but due to the complexity of the script and the details that must be followed, many viewers easily get lost in the layers of the story.
