Joika

An American girl, Joika, enrolled in a ballet academy in Moscow to become a prima ballerina at the Bolshoi Theatre. However, no one told her that the selection process in Russia is not like in America, where the best one wins, but rather the one who is more politically savvy.

The drama, inspired by true events, is set somewhere in the second decade of the 21st century. In addition to the protagonist’s struggle against the political and social system of Russian society, she must also fight not to sell her soul to the devil (though she did sell a little of it) and her body to a sponsor.

The only flaw in the film is that it doesn’t emphasize enough that Joy Womack (born in 1994) went to Moscow at just 15 years old. While watching the film, you get the impression that she is older. Clearly highlighting the fact that she went through all these hardships as a high schooler in a foreign country, without anyone of her own, would have left a much stronger and deeper impression on the audience.
